Drugs to Prevent/Treat Parasitic Diseases

Abstract

This effort conducts assessments on and improves candidate drugs coming from the DoD discovery program and from other collaborations for prevention and treatment of malaria to counter the continuing spread of drug resistance to current drugs; conducts assessments in animal models of currently available drugs for use against cutaneous leishmaniasis (a skin-based disease transmitted by sand flies); and selects the most effective and safe candidates for continued refinement and possible clinical testing. In FY17 this research area and the Vaccines for Prevention of Malaria research area are merged into one task area titled Parasitic Diseases – Drugs and Vaccines.
