Hemodynamic responses to simulated hemorrhage: Role for the carotid bodies

Abstract

Lower body negative pressure (LBNP) increases carotid body chemosensitivity. Whether the increase in chemosensitivity is functionally significant in the hemodynamic response to LBNP was previously unknown. We tested the hypothesis that desensitization of the carotid body chemoreceptors would improve the hemodynamic response to LBNP.
