ATP Is a Major Determinant of Phototrophic Bacterial Longevity in Growth Arrest

Abstract

The molecular and physiological basis of bacterial longevity in growth arrest is important to investigate for several reasons. Such investigations could improve treatment of chronic infections, advance use of non-growing bacteria as biocatalysts to make high yields of value-added products, and improve estimates of microbial activities in natural habitats, where cells are often growing slowly or not at all.
