Non-Equilibrium Materials

Abstract

The Non-Equilibrium Materials thrust will explore materials and materials structures that acquire novel properties when driven far from equilibrium. Work in this thrust will examine the physical underpinnings and applications of these systems in areas of interest to the DoD, including next generation electronics, high-performance computing, and sensing. Efforts will include the development of topologically protected excitations in electronic materials and fundamental studies of exotic quantum states of matter in periodically driven solid-state systems. This thrust is an outgrowth from Basic Photon Science.
