Face Identification at a Distance Focus Area

Abstract

The ability to identify persons of interest from safe, concealed, and long distances is an emerging need across the Joint Force. Face identification at a distance creates challenges that can only be addressed through improvements in technology including optics, video processing, and facial recognition algorithms. Investments will address challenges associated with image resolution, stabilization, and atmospheric turbulence, as well as other factors associated with collecting images from non-cooperative individuals. Associated technologies include rapid matching algorithms, storage of large facial databases, and secure dissemination within the DoD and our partners. This project will leverage existing efforts and ensure projects are not duplicative with ongoing facial identification work within the DoD or with outside agencies.
