Basic Photon Science

Abstract

The Basic Photon Science thrust is examining the fundamental science of photons and their interactions in integrated devices for potential DoD-applications such as communications, signal processing, spectroscopic sensing and imaging. One focus area is development of novel, chip-scale optical frequency comb sources and associated technologies for spectroscopic sensing, identification, and quantification of multiple trace materials in spectrally cluttered backgrounds. Additional research will explore development of a complex theoretical framework for maximum information extraction from complex scenes to guide development of new imaging technologies. Work in this thrust will establish the first-principles limits of photon detector performance in a variety of detector technologies to enable better, more sensitive detectors. Finally, the thrust area will explore how distributed networks of low-resolution cameras can capture information compared to a single high-resolution camera.
