Institute #1 – Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute
Abstract
Additive manufacturing (i.e., “3D printing”) is a process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually layer upon layer, as opposed to subtractive manufacturing methodologies such as traditional machining. The mission of the IMI is to accelerate additive manufacturing technologies to the U.S. manufacturing sector and increase domestic manufacturing competitiveness. Advanced additive manufacturing will benefit the DoD by enabling lifecycle cost savings and enhanced capabilities, including moving toward “focused logistics” – getting the right part in the right place in just the right time – for wartime and humanitarian missions using local supply chains. This IMI was established in 2012, with cooperative agreement funding contribution included in this budget through FY 2016.
