High-throughput Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) Sequencing (HTS) Technology Focus Area

Abstract

The High-throughput DNA Sequencing (HTS) Technology Focus Area will leverage technological advances in gene sequencing and bioinformatics to fundamentally change the way DNA is used to support forensics. These projects will employ current hardware coupled with custom chemistries, data analysis algorithms, software, databases, and information transmission pipelines to enable more comprehensive analysis of trace, degraded, and mixed DNA samples. This comprehensive data analysis allows for correlating individual activities and histories; the ability to determine biogeographical ancestry; increasing confidence in assigning extended kinship identifications; and, greater accuracy in predicting phenotypic attributes such as facial characteristics, eye colors, skin tones/variations, or physical deformities. This focus area also includes support for HTS databases that are designed to ingest large DNA data flows efficiently, use processing power for searching and analyzing big data, and employ big data analytics to make predictive assessments that would otherwise go unnoticed. This focus area will encourage collaboration on biometrics and forensics projects within the DoD, with interagency partners, with our partners in industry and academia, and with international partners where applicable. This collaboration will help maximize shared investment and prevent redundant research. Deliverables are shared throughout the biometrics and forensics communities.
