AN-M8A1 Obscuration Grenade

Abstract

This effort supports the Design/Type Classification/Production Prove Out of an improved obscurant grenade that provides the warfighter with screening performance approaching that of the legacy AN-M8 smoke grenade, using a different smoke formulation than the legacy's grenade's Hexachloroethane (HC). The use of HC has been restricted inside and outside the Continental United States (CONUS/OCONUS) due to its toxic effects. The legacy AN-M8 grenade is limited to use in contingency operations only. The M83 training smoke grenade is currently used in lieu of the AN-M8 in both training and tactical operations, but does not give screening performance comparable to the legacy AN-M8. Soldiers must use two or three M8 grenades to produce obscuration effects comparable to a single AN-M8 grenade.
