Mapping & Remote Sens
Abstract
This Project increases knowledge of terrain and human geography with a focus on improving the generation, management, analysis/reasoning, and modeling of geospatial data, and the exploitation of multi-source data. This fundamental knowledge forms the scientific "springboard" for the future development of applications, techniques, and tools to improve the tactical commander's knowledge of the operating environment. Results of this research are used to: extract and characterize natural and man-made features from reconnaissance imagery in near-real time; understand socio-cultural influences; exploit terrain analysis and reasoning techniques; and explore the potential of space, airborne, and terrestrial geospatial sensor technologies to provide real-time geospatial intelligence to all Army Warfighting functions. This research uses terrain and socio-cultural data to improve situational awareness and enhance information dominance, leading to increased survivability, lethality, and mobility. Work in this Project provides theoretical underpinnings for PE 0602784A (Military Engineering Technology) / Project 855 (Topographical, Image Intel & Space). FY20 realignments are due to financial restructuring in support of Army Modernization Priorities. The cited work is consistent with the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering priority focus areas and the Army Modernization Strategy.
