OFFensive Swarm-Enabled Tactics (OFFSET)

Abstract

The OFFensive Swarm-Enabled Tactics (OFFSET) program designed, developed, and demonstrated a swarm system architecture to advance the innovation, interaction, and integration of novel swarm tactics. The program examined enabling technologies for collaborative autonomy for large teams of unmanned systems, including unmanned ground and air capabilities through the use of both virtual, game-based and physical, live-fly testbeds. Key research thrusts included the development of advanced swarm tactics-centered autonomy and development of human-swarm teaming interface technologies. These combined enhancements facilitated insights and enabled employment of these collective systems to address current needs and defeat future threats. The program considered technologies supporting U.S. ground and air operations, extensible to other operating environments, requiring organic and/or tactical swarm capabilities, and leveraged low-cost, rapidly deploy-able, autonomous system technologies.
