Hypersonics Flight Demonstration (HyFly)

Abstract

(U)The Hypersonics Flight Demonstration (HyFly) program will develop and demonstrate advanced technologies for hypersonic flight. The ultimate goal of the program is to demonstrate vehicle performance that could lead to an operational tactical surface launched missile range of 600 nautical miles. Specifically, the program will demonstrate an F-15 launched missile configuration with a range of 400 nautical miles, a maximum sustainable cruise speed in excess of Mach 6, and the ability to accurately terminate the missile on a GPS guided impact target. Technical challenges include the scramjet propulsion system, lightweight, high-temperature materials for both aerodynamic and propulsion structures, and guidance and control in the hypersonic flight regime. Based on the results of the first two test flights, subsystem components will be modified and a third flight test has been added to the program development schedule.
