Very High Speed Vessel (VHSV)

Abstract

The Very High Speed Vessel (VHSV) program will explore the development of a small tactical surface vessel capable of protecting high value naval vessels in contested littoral environments. The program will evaluate tactical mobility, mission endurance, lethality, and survivability that is well beyond that of any current or proposed littoral warfare platform. The vessel will be designed to operate as an unmanned naval combat system with an integrated control system and weapons suite which will be optimized to defend against irregular naval warfare threats such as fast inshore attack crafts, high speed swarming combatant boats, and conventional diesel submarines operating in shallow coastal waters. The VHSV system will leverage emerging developments in reconfigurable hull forms, fluid drag reduction, hybrid naval propulsion design, and dynamic control in fully cavitated flow to develop a vessel with significantly superior maximum speed, endurance, and seakeeping in elevated sea states.
