System Design Optimization for Lightweighting:

Abstract

This effort will focus on optimization of platform design to reduce weight in both traditional and novel methods. This effort will demonstrate best practices in cost-conscious, multi-material design for components to reduce ground vehicle weight, as well as demonstrate holistic weight reduction with informed system and component-level design decisions. This will be accomplished by using and evaluating design tools, advanced materials, manufacturing processes and assembly technologies to design lightweight systems, develop lightweight components and enhance the ability to use novel approaches for lightweighting. This effort leverages lessons learned from prior and ongoing individual component efforts within industry, academia and Department of Defense (DoD). This effort is done in coordination with efforts in PEs 0602601A (Combat Vehicle and Automotive Technology), 0602618A (Ballistics Technology), 0603005A (Combat Vehicle and Automotive Advanced Technology), and 0708045A (Manufacturing Technology).
