Video and Image Retrieval and Analysis Tool (VIRAT)
Abstract
The Video and Image Retrieval and Analysis Tool (VIRAT) program developed and demonstrated a system for video data exploitation that enables an analyst to rapidly find video content of interest from archives and provides alerts to the analyst of events of interest during live operations. The ability to quickly search large volumes of existing video data and monitor real-time video data for specific activities or events provides a new capability to the U.S. military and intelligence agencies. Currently, video analysis is very labor intensive, limited to metadata queries, manual annotations, and "fast-forward" examination of clips. The software tools developed under VIRAT radically improve the analysis of huge volumes of video data by: 1) alerting operators when specific events or activities occur at specific locations or over a range of locations and; 2) enabling fast, content-based searches of existing video archives. The final products of the VIRAT program have been transitioned to the Distributed Common Ground System (DCGS) - Army.
