Warfighter Health Prot & Perf Stnds

Abstract

This project conducts research to prevent and protect Soldiers from training and operational injuries, the refinement of mechanisms for detection of physiological and psychological health problems, the evaluation of hazards to head, neck, spine, eyes, and ears, the standards for rapid return-to-duty, and the determination of new methods to sustain and enhance performance across the operational spectrum. This research provides medical information important to the design and operational use of military systems, and this work forms the basis for behavioral, training, pharmacological (drug actions), and nutritional interventions. The four main areas of study are: (1) Physiological Health (2) Environmental Health and Protection (3) Injury Prevention and Reduction (4) Psychological Health and Resilience Promising efforts identified in this project are further matured under PE 0603002A, project MM3. The cited work is consistent with the Assistant Secretary of Defense, Research and Engineering Science and Technology focus areas and the Army Modernization Strategy. Work in this project is performed by the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), Silver Spring, MD; U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), Natick, MA; U.S. Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR), Fort Sam Houston, TX; and the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL), Fort Rucker, AL. Efforts in this project support the Soldier Portfolio and the principle areas of Combat Casualty Care and Military Operational Medicine.
