Physics in Biology

Abstract

Understanding the fundamental physical phenomena that underlie biological processes and functions can provide new insights and lead to unique opportunities for exploiting such phenomena. The Physics in Biology thrust explored the role and impact of quantum effects in biological processes and systems. This included exploiting manifestly quantum mechanical effects that exist in biological systems at room temperature to develop a revolutionary new class of robust, compact, high sensitivity and high selectivity sensors. The quantum phenomena uncovered was demonstrated to control the attraction of insects to humans with the potential to significantly reduce insect bites and thus the transmission of parasitic, bacterial or viral pathogens.
