2009QRF0001_Mini-Scan Mirror (MSM) - Ultra-Reliable Infrared Countermeasures Beam Director
Abstract
Prior to the initiation of this project, the Office of the Secretary of Defense-Acquisition Technology and Logistics Aircraft Survivability Joint Analysis Team (JAT) found that there were no Infrared Countermeasures (IRCM) beam directors that were suitable (small, light and reliable) for use with small helicopters. Multiple attempts by several vendors to produce a smaller version of conventional beam directors had demonstrated marginal results. This effort leveraged the smaller and more reliable micro-magnetically actuated Mini-Scan Mirror (MSM) technology developed for another application by the Army and Navy under Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) in an effort to develop a “game changer” for IRCM applications.
