Basic Expeditionary Airfield Resources (BEAR) Energy Initiatives

Abstract

This effort develops, tests, and evaluates BEAR technologies in support of air bases at austere locations and augmentation of beddown at fixed installations. The BEAR initiative, a joint effort with the Army, focuses on efficiency and economy of resources. This project includes autonomous and manual power grid management; reuse of energy sources including waste water; the full spectrum of contingency base waste handling, treatment and energy reuse, power grid situational awareness; power outage management; smart shelter management; shelter usage optimization; thermal comfort energy reduction; and evaluation of overall energy consumption to spread demand more evenly.
