ACCURACY OF THREE-GYRO GUNSIGHT CALIBRATION FOR CALIBER 0.50 GUNFIRE,

Abstract

The 3-gyro gunsight for air-to-air gunfire fire control of fixed-gun fighters utilizes 3 single-degree-of-freedom gyros for angular velocity measurement of target motion and cross-roll correction, a 2-degree-of-freedom gyro for determination of the vertical for gravity-drop correction, and an angle-of-attack measuring device for correction for velocity jump. Results of an accuracy study are presented in which simulated photographs show where the projection pattern will strike the target. A 5-mil-diam. dispersion pattern, represented by a circle drawn to scale, is shown as displaced from the center of the target by the calibration deviation or error. The effects of gun wander are not considered in the pictoral presentation of gun sight performance, although possible limits of the location of the 80% gun dispersion pattern are suggested for assumed limits of gun wander.
