METHODS OF DETERMINING NATURAL MODES AND FREQUENCIES FOR TRANSVERSE VIBRATIONS OF BEAMS

Abstract

Differential-equation, variational, and integral-equation methods for determining natural modes and frequencies of transverse vibration of beams are outlined, and their limitations are discussed. The methods described are applicable to straight beams with symmetric cross section which vibrate in the plane of symmetry. They yield satisfactory results for modes whose half-wave length is long in comparison to the average height of the beam.1
