FLUORINE CONTAINING ELASTOMERS

Abstract

Fluorine-containing silicones were synthesized by reacting an F - containing Grignard reagent with SiClsub4, or tetraethyl silicate, and hydrolyzing the monomer silane product. The F-containing styrenes (3-(trifluoro-methyl)stryene, 3,5,-bis(trifluormoethyl)styrene, and 2,5,-bis(trifluoromethyl) styrene) were copolymerized with butadiene by an emulsion technique. These materials are to be evaluated as low-temperature, fuel-resistant elastomers. A literature review of fluorinated styrenes and butadienes is appended.
