THE CALCULATION OF THE ENERGY DEPOSITION IN SOFT TISSUE BY FAST NEUTRONS EMERGING FROM A NON-CAPTURING MEDIUM

Abstract

The biological effect on the human body caused by the nearly isotropic falling of monochromatic fast neutrons on the surface of the tissue is calculated for the case of a subject person leaning against the reflector of a pile. The variation of mean-free path with energy is neglected, and the biological effects are shown to be proportional to the energy flux. The ratio of the dose in rep received in the tissue, during an 8-hr period, to the flux measured at a detector in absence of the tissue is compared graphically for 5- and 1-mev incident neutrons which are normal to the surface of isotropic.
