THE STRUCTURE AND ACTIVITY OF CATALYTICALLY ACTIVE SOLIDS

Abstract

Research is discussed on the structure of glass, thermomagnetic analysis, supported Pd catalysts, and purple S. The anomalous magnetic moment of ions of Ni, Co, and U in silicate glasses may probably be interpreted, in terms of the relative contributions of these ions, as being tetrahedrally coordinated integral parts of the network, or as octahedrally coordinated network modifiers. Magnetic methods may be used in glass chemistry. Thermomagnetic analysis of the solid-state -reaction Gamma-Fesub2Osub3 to Alpha-Fesub2Osub3 gave definite evidence that the activation energy for this reaction is not related to particle size. Supported Pd metal on high-area ALOsub3 was shown to yield no enhancement of magnetic susceptibility and thus not to show the dispersion effect exhibited by many paramagnetic oxides in supported condition. Purple S, made by freezing the vapor from 450 deg C onto a finger cooled in liquid N, was shown to be paramagnetic.
