(THEORETICAL AND GENERAL PROBLEMS IN RELATION TO VERBAL BEHAVIOR)

Abstract

Methods for identifying persons unsuitable for military service were first studied. A primary problem was the identification of malingering on personality tests. Studies in verbal behavior were also made. Some of the conclusions are as follows: (1) old associations influence problem solutions, and (2) the order of words in which a problem is stated has an influence on the kind of solution appearing most frequently. A work-association technique for the measurement of attitudes was developed. Verbal habits operating alone were found to influence personality trait ratings. Other studies indicated that associative output was greater for attitude-related words than for stimulus words unrelated to attitude and that the recall of verbal material was enhanced by spaced recall trials.
