QUARTERLY REPORT FOR THE PERIOD OCTOBER 1, 1952 TO JANUARY 1, 1953 (THE FORMATION OF HYDRAZINE)

Abstract

Results are presented of a preliminary study of the effect of the introduction of liquid H sub 2 O which flows through a reactor during the formation of N sub 2 H sub 4 from NH sub 3 in an electric discharge. The degree of conversion under anhydrous conditions and in the presence of H sub 2 O appeared to be independent of the NH sub 3 flow rate; higher N sub 2 H sub 4 yields with a shorter reactor were indicated. The amount of N sub 2 H sub 4 collected per unit time was increased at lower pressures, and lower power yields were obtained in the presence of H sub 2 O. Methods for decreasing the power losses caused by the presence of an aqueous NH sub 3 liquid phase in the electric discharge are discussed. The design of a reactor which eliminates the formation of a continuous liquid film on the reactor walls is described; it will allow measurements for NH sub 3 flows up to 12 cu ft/min at a pressure of 30 mm Hg.
