SEMI-ANNUAL PROGRESS REPT. - 1 JULY TO 31 DEC 1952
Abstract
Progress in the following areas of the germ-free life studies is summarized: germ-free life production, biochemistry and nutrition, bacteriology and serology, physiology and pathology, and virology. A description of a study on the comparative effect of total body radiation in germ-free and conventional Lobund albino rats includes the methods involved, results from exposure of the rats to 300-1000 r, and the effects of total body radiation on contaminated, previously germ-free rats. Exploratory experiments were made on the effect of postirradiation streptomycin treatment on germ-free rats, latent and symbiotic virsues in germ-free animals, and post-mortem bacterial invasion into the peritoneal cavity of the conventional rat.
