THE COMPRESSIBILITY OF VITREOUS SILICA

Abstract

A possibility of the bending of the Si-O-Si lines in vitreous S iO sub2 was assumed to explain the increase of compressibility of the material under pressure. Network energy calculations showed that the assumption was reasonable. Since the compressibility began to increase immediately with a pressure increase, the calculations indicated some bending of the Si-O-si lines under zero or atmospheric pressure. The gradual rather than sudden increase in compressibility suggested a radomness in the degree of bending of the lines. The calculations were for a purely ionic model; not attempt was made to estimate the effect of covalent binding between Si and O.
