MEASUREMENT OF THE EFFECTIVE GAIN OF A RESONANT SLOT

Abstract

Research was conducted which indicates the agreement that can b e expected between theoretical predictions and several sets of carefully made experimental measurements. The estimated error in the experimental value of gain assigned to a thin lambda/2 resonant slot in a ground plane was + or - 0.3 db, and the assigned value of gain differed by less than 0.1 db from the theoretical value. The estimated error in gain assigned to a wave guide opening into a ground plane was + or - 0.5 db, and the assigned value differed from the theoretical value by less than 0.1 db. The amplitude of the periodic variation in received power caused by multiple scattering was considerably reduced by the use of absorbing cloth on the metallic parts behind the receiving horn. The results indicated the necessity for an averaging procedure to eliminate the effects of multiple scattering.
