TESTS OF INTERLOCK BETWEEN SALVO LATCH AND GUN CAPTAIN'S READY SWITCH FOR 8-INCH BREECH MECHANISM, MARK 9 AND MODS

Abstract

Variations of the components of an interlock between the salvo latch and the gun captain's ready switch were evaluated in firing and nonfiring tests with an 8-in. breech mechanism. The interlocks were developed to improve the safety of operation of rotating-plug, carrier-type breech mechanisms. Recommendations are made for designing an interlock having (1) a panel of lights which indicates the various steps in the sequence of firing the gun and is placed for ready observation by the gun crew; (2) a bearing-bronze buffer for the breech-operating lever in which hydraulic fluid is used; and (3) a standard single-breech-operating lever latch modified with a switch actuator.
