ROD WARHEADS, MODEL NO. 126

Abstract

Tests were conducted to determine the fragmentation characteristics of 8-in.-diam warheads loaded with Composition C-3. The war heads were made of 60 keystone-shaped rods brazed together to form a sleeve 0.375-in. thick with longitudinal grooves 0.060-in. wide and 0.250-in. deep. Two of the 6 war heads had circumferential grooves 0.125-in. wide and 0.187-in. deep to break the rods into 4-in. lengths. The war heads without the circumferential grooves produced about 35 fragments 9 to 10.5 in. long; the remaining rods were broken approximately in half. The circumferentially grooved approximately in half. The circumferentially grooved war head produced the expected 4-in. rods. The average rod-fragment velocity for all the war heads was 4800 fps.
