FRAGMENTATION OF DOUBLE SLEEVE WARHEAD NO. 141

Abstract

Tests were conducted to determine the fragmentation and velocity characteristics of an Angled Arrow war head which had a 0.208-in. gap between the 0.2- and 0.192-in. -thick inner and outer sleeves. The inner sleeve was loaded with Composition C-3. The war head produced 1547 fragments weighing over 5/8 g. Of these, 516 fragments capable of piercing 1/8 in. of mild steel were recorded in the polar zone from 75 deg to 100 deg. The fragments had an average median velocity of 3200 fps. The tests indicated that the air gap decreased fragment velocity by 600 fps.
