EVALUATION OF BIS(TRINITROETHYL)NITRAMINE AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR CYCLOTRIMETHYLENE-TRINITRAMINE (RDX) IN COMPOSITION A

Abstract

The desensitization of bis(trinitroethyl)nitramine (BTNEN) was attempted to obtain an explosive composition analogous to Composition A-3. No satisfactorily stable, desensitized material resulted when BTNEN was combined (usually by a solvent or hot water slurry method) with approximately 60 desensitizers. Tests of pressed charges of a BTNEN-Composition A-3 analog (90% BTNEN and 10% carnauba wax) indicated that the booster sensitivity and relative brisance of the analog were higher than corresponding values for TNT Comp. A-3, and a BTNEU/Aristowax90/10 analog.
