TESTS OF POINT DETONATING FUZE T195E11 FOR 20MM AMMUNITION
Abstract
Functioning-performance and sensitivity tests were conducted on a spin-armed ball-rotor fuze with a rebound-type firing pin. Tests conducted at a 160-ft range and with tetryl-loaded projectiles indicated that the fuze was not armed 15 ft from the muzzle when fired at a muzzle velocity (MV) of 3300 fps from a 1/25-twist barrel. Arming occurred at 35 to 40 ft for 90% of the rounds. The fuze functioned satisfactorily at 1650- and 3200-fps striking velocities (SV) against 0.020-in. 24S-T3 Al alloy at obliquities from 0 deg to 80 deg and against thicker targets at 0 deg to 45 deg obliquities. However, no fuse action occurred on 24S-T3 Al alloy with 0.072 to 0.102 in. thicknesses at 0 deg obliquity and a 3200-fps SV. Proper function was exhibited on a 0.125-in. thickness of the same alloy at 60 deg to 75 deg obliquities and a 3200-fps SV. Against the same 0.125-in. alloy, the fuze ws unreliable at 50 deg to 60 deg obliquities and 1650 fps and at over 80 deg obliquities and 3200-fps SV. An 80% reliability was noted at a 3200-fps SV and a 60 deg to 80 deg obliquity on 0. 125-in.-thick mild steel. Unreliable functioning was noted against 0.375-in.- thick 24S-T4 Al alloy at both SV's and 60 deg to 80 deg obliquities. The minimum sensitivity thickness appeared to be 0.02 in. or less on 24S-T3 Al alloy at obliquities up to 80 deg. No fuze action was noted through 0.02 in. blotter paper at 0 deg obliquity or through a heavy rain; thin targets produced a slight fuze-action delay. The tests indicated no appreciable functioning-performance difference between the tested fuze and the Mk 78 Mod 0 fuze except at 0.072- to 0.102-in. thicknesses.
