EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF EVEN-ODD CHARACTER OF EXCITED ELECTRONIC STATES OF MOLECULES WITH A CENTER OF SYMMETRY

Abstract

A method is presented for determining the even or odd character of the excited state of a centrally symmetric aromatic molecule from the absorption-intensity change resulting from substitutions. Even-even transition intensities increased with monosubstitution and decreased with opposed disubstitution. Even-odd intensities increased with monosubstitution and increased further with opposed disubstitution.
