A QUANTITATIVE METHOD FOR THE PREDICTION OF RAINFALL PATTERNS
Abstract
An equation is derived which relates the vertical motion of the lower troposphere to the vorticity field of the upper troposphere. A vorticity analysis shows that, under certain conditions, cloudiness and precipitation should prevail in regions where the vorticity decreases downstream along streamlines, while fair weather should prevail where the vortically increases along streamlines. Promising verifications of the precipitation-forecast method were obtained with observed and prognostic charts.
