TESTS OF ARMING WIRES AN-M6A2, MK 1 AND MK 3

Abstract

Tests were conducted to determine the arming-wire rivet-head breaking loads, with arming wires subjected to static loads and 5-lb loads dropped 20 in. All the rivet heads were essentially similar, and the arming-wire strength was within design specifications except for failures by coil spreading and unwinding in the Mk 3 assemblies. An AN-M6A2 rivet head which was rotated with an electric drill under hand tension showed wear and pulled through the coil in 20 min. A similar failure occurred after a 90 min free suspension in a 450-knot air stream. However, the Mk3 arming wire showed little rivet-head wear under the same conditions. The AN-M6A2 arming wire was placed in the tail-fuze position and subjected to a 450-knot air stream for 68 min. None of the components showed wear or weakening. Reported malfunctions were attributed to wire whipping after bomb releases. Tabulated test data and photographs are appended.
