RECOVERY AND RANGE TEST OF 3'.'15 AA PROJECTILES IN 3'.'15/67 CALIBER GUN, TYPE A MOD 0 SERIAL NO. 1

Abstract

Recovery and range tests indicated satisfactory performance of the 3. 15-in./67-cal barrel-projector combination. The mean corrected D/R was 0.37% for twenty 5-round groups. The performance supported the hypothesis that the 3-in./ 70-cal barrel-projectile combination difficulties which have been manifested in low accuracy, body engraving, and spiral wear are caused by band failures arising from the relatively large ratio of band diameter to body diameter. Preliminary tests of nylon rotating bands for the 3.15-in. projectile appeared promising.
