PERSONNEL FACTORS IN POLAR OPERATIONS

Abstract

A survey of the literature was made of the personnel factors and problems arising in polar regions in respect to the (1) selection of men for polar duty, (2) orientation and indoctrination problems, (3) effects of polar conditions upon job performance and morale, and (4) physical and psychological reactions to extreme cold. The findings of the literature survey were used to develop an interview guide, and 53 individuals with polar or extreme cold experience were interviewed. The data obtained from the literature survey and the interviews are presented, and recommendations are given for improving naval personnel policies to more adequately meet polar operating conditions. Research recommendations are suggested which could provide further needed information.
