FORCE AT A POINT IN THE INTERIOR OF A SEMI-INFINITE SOLID

Abstract

The solution is obtained of the linear equations of equilibrium of an elastic body for the case of a force acting at a point within an isotropic body bounded by a plane. The results are obtained directly by an application of potential theory and Papkovitch functions. The results are identical with those of Mindlin (Physics 7:195-202, 1936) which were obtained by starting with Kelvin;s solution for a force in an infinite body and guessing the nuclei of strain to add outside of the semi-infinite body so as to annul the tractions on the plane boundary.
