FOUR FORMULAE FOR SELECTING LEADERS ON THE BASIS OF PERSONALITY

Abstract

The leadership abilities of 334 men were determined in common small-group performances according to 4 operational definitions of leadership: (1) persistent momentary problem solvers (selected by observers), (2) salient leaders (selected by observers), (3) sociometric leaders (retrospectively selected by group members), and (4) members elected as leaders (by group members). Sixteen personality factors were measured on a paper-and-pencil questionnaire, and the leaders were significantly higher on adventurous cyclothymia, absence of worrying anxiousness, deliberate will control, and superego strength. Four formulas for the selection of leaders were developed from the personality differences between leaders and non-leaders.
