A TEST OF THE VALIDITY OF THE ELSBERG METHOD OF OLFACTOMETRY

Abstract

Blast-injection olfactory thresholds were determined for 10 subjects using 20 ml of octane and of AcOAm in 3 concentrations: (1) pure, (2) half odor and half odor-less mineral oil, and (3) 1 part odor to 9 parts mineral oil. The threshold represented the magnitude of the odorous air blast injected into the nostril which gave rise to an odor sensation. Single nose pieces were used, and the thresholds were obtained by an ascending series of 0.5-ml blast increases. No significant effect of odor concentration was found; this indicated that the blast-injection threshold was not translatable into molecular terms. A technique to vary the concentration rather than the pressure was recommended.
