AMINO ACID METABOLISM OF MAN IN HEALTH AND DISEASE

Abstract

The protein-sparing potential of various carbohydrates was determined by the rate of utilization of test doses of the sugars (1 g/kg of body weight) in 50 subjects ranging from 5 - 89 yr. The absorption of dextrose decreased markedly with age, but age only slightly influenced the absorption of fructose. The rate of utilization of invert sugar and sucrose was greater for all ages than dextrose, but not as great as for fructose alone. Aged insulin-controlled diabetic patients also had a greater tolerance for fructose. Greater protein sparing was obtained by intravenously administering 10% invert sugar rather than 5 or 10% dextrose in 24 patients. Greater utilization in intravenously infused amino acids was achieved by increasing the caloric intake of the patient; the highest N balances were obtained with alcohol-containing preparations. Low N balances resulted from delaying the oral fat supplement an hr or more beyond the period of infusion. Electrophoresis data suggested a difference in the metabolic patterns of acute and chronic cases of rheumatic heart disease. A normal nutritional state was found in 211 institutionalized older women despite the anomalies of their self-selected diet. A dietary supplement of protein, carbohydrate, and fat appeared beneficial to some cardiovascular patients. A microcolorimetric method for determining total plasma proteins and hemoglobin in 0.02-cc blood and a micromethod for determining dextrose and fructose in 0.1-cc whole blood were determined.
