Fragmentation Testing of Dual Initiated 3in./5 Warhead No. 144

Abstract

Tests were conducted to determine the fragment velocity distribution and space distribution of the war head loaded with composition C-3. The explosive charge was a 0.60-in.-thick, 2.88-in.-od, 12.0-in.-long annulus. Both initiators were at one end of the war head and diametrically opposed. Results showed no appreciable increase in fragment velocity with increased distance from the initiators. Furthermore, there were no noticeable change in fragment space distribution with respect to the axis through the initiators.
