BALLISTIC TEST OF COOL PROPELLANTS EX-6985 AND EX-7006

Abstract

Ballistics tests were conducted to determine the suitability of EX- 6985 and -7006, having flame temperatures of 1816 deg and 1949 degK, respectively, as replacements for EX-6735 and -6649 in the 3-in./50-cal gun. Satisfactory performance was obtained when EX-6985 was fired with the XC-D22/250 primer and 0.4 lb of SPDN-4438 placed at the bottom of the case, the balance of the charge consisting of EX-6985 on top of SPDN-4438. EX-7006 was satisfactory in firings with the Mk 42 primer and 150 g of NPFB-223 in a pyralin container placed around the forward end of the primer. The final pressure of 14.9 tons/sq in. with EX-6985, although 0.1 ton/sq in. below the allowable minimum, closely matched the ballistics obtained with EX-6735.
