FRAGMENTATION TEST OF WARHEAD NO. 145 FOR ORIOLE MISSILE

Abstract

Twelve Oriole war heads, made of 10-in.-od, 4-in.-long steel cylindrical cases and having 4 styles of end plates, were tested to determine the effect of geometry of explosive loading on the fragment velocity and space distribution pattern. Each head was placed with its axis vertical at the center of a 30-ft-radius arena on a 7 1/2-ft-high platform. Fragment velocities were obtained by recording hits with a 16 mm Fastax camera. Space distribution was determined by dividing 1-in.-thick steel plates in polar zones of 5 deg each from 75 deg to 100 deg. All hits in these zones were recorded if they were estimated to be able to penetrate 1/8-in. mild steel plate. The recorded hits represent 1/3 of the number expected for the total polar zones. The war heads produced velocities which increased as the weight of the explosive was increased.
