PROPERTIES OF ELECTROKINETIC TRANSDUCERS
Abstract
Streaming-potential measurements at alternating pressures were used to study variations of the electrokinetic parameters with temperature under fully stabilized conditions. The measurements were made by using a diaphragm pump with the valves removed to produce a near-sinusoidal alternating pressure of about 1.5 psi at 30 c; connections were made to both a standard and a test electrokinetic unit. Dry ice and a 300-w lamp provided temperature cycling. A similar process was used to determine response to a step function. Frequency- response tests from 10 to 100 kc were conducted in a water-filled tank with a Brush BM-102 transducer as the sound source. Conductivity, impedance, and permeability measurements were also made. A study was made to determine liquids suitable for use in blast gages. A rule-of-thumb method of selection was discussed and applied to certain organic liquids. Tests indicated that acetonitrile with microporous porcelain forms a satisfactory transducing combination with voltage sensitivities up to 500 mv/psi or -103 db.
