BINOCULAR SUMMATION OF GEOMETRICAL PATTERNS AS A RANGE INDICATOR
Abstract
The relative sensitivity of various summation reticles was determined by comparison with stereoscopic reticles in a modified telestereoscope and in the stereoptometer. The summation reticles generally were inferior; the variability of the range setting was from 2 to 5 times that with the stereoscopic reticles. Results with the bouncing-ball summation reticle suggested that it has advantages in (1) its simplicity in the communication of the ranging task, (2) its ability to enter shaded and obstructed areas, and (3) the use of personnel with poor binocular vision habits. However, the results indicated a change in sensitivity with distance and a consistent overranging of the target.
