FRAGMENTATION TEST OF WARHEAD NO. 124

Abstract

Fragmentation data were obtained for the 12-in.-long composition-B- loaded war head no. 124 which incorporated a fluted rubber liner with grooves 10 deg apart to produce 35 rods. The war head was suspended horizontally over a water pit covering the 60 deg to 120 deg polar-angle zone and initiated by a tetryl booster and a blasting cap. Vertical steel panels 20 ft high and covering the 77 deg to 103 deg longitudinal zone were placed 40 ft from the war head. While the maximum length of a recovered rod was 5 in., the majority were 2 to 3 in. long. The median rod velocity was 5300 fps. The fluted rubber liner was unsatisfactory.
