BOMBS AND ASSOCIATED COMPONENTS. COLD WEATHER TESTING OF FIN ASSEMBLIES TYPE EX 10 MOD 10 AND MK 83 MOD 1

Abstract

Securing the Ex 10 Mod 10 fin assembly to the Ex 10 Mod 10 bomb and the Mk 83 Mod 1 fin assembly to the Ex 10 Mod 15 bomb required about 4 and 2 min, respectively, at -65 deg C compared to 1 min 45 sec and 1 min 17 sec, respectively, at ambient temperatures. The former fin assembly used knurled nuts which became fouled with ice; the latter was secured with set screws. The Mk 83 Mod 1 fin assembly was considered more practicable for service.
